This talk starts with the history of color-corrected optics from the 18th century with Isaac Newton and John Dollon and then continues with essential contributions by Joseph von Fraunhofer and by Ernst Abbe. The establishment of a glass laboratory at Leitz in 1954 marks the beginning of the development of apochromatically corrected lenses in Wetzlar with Leitz glasses. Essential glass materials were developed there that were first used for microscope lens systems and later in photographic lenses for high performance requirements. The development of photographic Leica APO lenses is presented in detail. You will learn why apochromatic correction of lenses is essential for high-end digital photography. The Leica APO-Summicron-SL and M lenses are representative of this top performance.
